2003 Rolex Vintage Festival, Lime Rock Park, Connecticut
Labor Day weekend is the time to be in western Connecticut at Lime Rock Park for the Rolex Vintage Festival. Norman Barrs 1929 Blower Stutz and George Holmans DV-32 powered 1928 car were both there, well prepared and ready to roll. George would once again handle the Barrs car and Georges son Bill would demonstrate his considerable skills with the 28 Stutz. Meanwhile, the pre-war Group 1 was one of the largest on the program and over 30 cars regularly answered the Grid Call. Continued...
On the Pole at Laguna Seca
Two Splendid Black Stutzes engaged 27 other prewar sports and racing cars in Group 1 activities at the 30th running of the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, August 16 17. Team Stutz fielded Norman Barrs race-winning 1929 Blown Black Hawk and George Holmans freshly rejuvenated 1928 Black Hawk with DV-32 power. Both were ready and waiting beneath the white tent of KTR Vintage Racing Services from Ayer MA. George Holman would continue his winning style on the Barrs #87 Stutz while Jon Lee would have the privilege of position on George Holmans #88 car.
Thursdays track familiarization session was invaluable and showed both cars to be in fine form. An afternoon track tour with a Skip Barber Driving School instructor, in a new Viper ACD Coupe, turned into an important educational experience. Our instructor showed a great track line for a larger car that would, ultimately, trim nearly 10 seconds from lap times of both cars. Continued...
Barrs' Stutz Wins Again @ V.I.R.
V.S.C.C.A. GOVERNOR'S CUP 2003
VIRGINIA INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
SATURDAY, MAY 3rd and SUNDAY, MAY 4th, 2003
Race day arrived dry, warm and sunny for the fabulaour and very demanding 2.26-mile north course at V.I.R.
Sunday, a large contingent of pre-war Bentley cars was on display and a number of these were invited to race in a Bentley only race involving 3 litre, 4 1/2 litre and Speed Sixes. An invitation waws extended to the Stutz Blackhawk to participate. Starting from the back of the grid, the Stutz was in the lead by the end of lap 3 and remained out front throughout the race. This is a remarkable performance for this All-American sports car.
In another race Saturday with some 7 pre-war and 17 post-war sports cars, the Stutz started in midfield position and by the race end only 3 of the very fast post war sports cars were in front of the Stutz.
All together this was the most rewarding weekend for the Stutz Racing Team and all credit goes to George Holman who prepared and drove the car.
Norman Barrs' Black Hawk Winns @ Lime Rock
The Barrs' Stutz arrived at George Holman's shop on the 4th of April, and had its first race in America on April 12th at Lime Rock Park in the hills of western Connecticut. The car performed flawlesly on the track every lap. It was 4th fastest in the very first practice session. Driven hard by George Holman, having qualified 4th, the Stutz moved quickly to 3rd passing a supercharged MG K-1 on the 1st lap. On lap two the car was up to 2nd having passed a very quick T37 Bugatti. on lap three the Stutz over took the leading 328 BMW on the main straight and lead the rest of the race.
This is a great accomplishment by Norman and Mike Treutlein who prepared the car. The next event will be in Virginia at VIR in May on the 3rd-5th. Look for more news on the racing of this magnificent Stutz.
